Here is a suggestion regarding package delivery.
UPS and FedEx have websites consumers can sign up on to receive alerts about their packages. Sign up is free for both carriers. The alerts gives several days notice as to when the package will be delivered. If the recipient is not going to be home the day of delivery, the package can be held and redelivered to the same address or to a neighbors, for a small fee of $5, or picked up at the distribution facility at no charge. FedEx's center is in Santa Maria.
Also, both carriers will allow you to put a notice in your profile as to where to deliver the package, i.e. behind the side gate. Also note, some small UPS packages are now being delivered by the USPS, so if people are expecting packages, they should confirm with the shipper or via the tracking number if UPS will deliver or USPS.
Here are the web sites to set up profiles.
UPS. I also learned you can redirect those UPS Packages being delivered by the Post Office, UPS SurePost.
